Karel Zeman (1910–1989) was a pioneering Czech film director, artist, and animator, renowned for his imaginative integration of live action, stop-motion animation, and matte painting. Often called the “Czech Méliès,” in reference to Georges Méliès, he is also regarded as one of cinema’s most accomplished interpreters of Jules Verne. Zeman developed a distinctive visual style that combined cinematic storytelling with the aesthetics of illustration and early engravings. His most celebrated films include Journey to the Beginning of Time (1955), Invention for Destruction (1958), and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1961), works that earned international acclaim and helped bring Czechoslovak cinema to global prominence. Admired by figures such as Pablo Picasso, Charlie Chaplin, and Salvador Dalí, his work continues to be studied for its technical and artistic ingenuity. His influence can be seen in contemporary filmmakers including Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, and Wes Anderson.
The museum traces the life and work of Karel Zeman, from his early animations and puppet films of the 1940s to his final creative period. A central focus is placed on his most significant works, including Journey to the Beginning of Time, Invention for Destruction, and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen. Designed as an interactive, studio-like environment, the exhibition invites visitors to engage directly with Zeman’s techniques, experimenting with special effects using their own photo and video equipment.
The galleries function as film sets, with staged backdrops where visitors can create their own scenes—piloting a flying machine, walking on the moon, or stepping inside the iconic submarine from Invention for Destruction. The exhibition also features original puppets, archival materials, and previously unpublished photographs, while serving as a playful and educational space dedicated to preserving and promoting Karel Zeman’s legacy.
The Museum came to life in 2012 and continues to thrive thanks to the collaboration of Ludmila and Linda with Ondrej Beranek, Jakub Fabel and Marcel Kral. Today the Museum is managed by the fabulous Lenka Priknerova.

The Fabulous World of
Karel Zeman
By Ludmila Zeman & Linda Zeman Spaleny
After the museum opened, Czech publisher Albatros CPress proposed a book about Karel Zeman’s life and work—another kind of museum in book form. We embraced the idea and chose to tell his story visually. The book invites the reader to discover this unique filmmaker and peak inside his secret lab of tricks. From family archives we chose behind the scenes photographs, meticulously drawn storyboards, and production designs. In addition, thanks to Ludmila’s close working relationship with her father, for the first time there is a detailed description of his labor intensive method of seamlessly combining film techniques before computer technology. The goal of our book is to delight, excite and inspire.
